RE: Boat Launching with a DP

I saw a real nice Class A up to the roof in Canyon Lake, east of Apache Junction, AZ 4 years ago who tried it. The only good point was that the boat was floating fine. I wouldn't risk it, but different strokes.... John

RE: AZ Hwy 87

Just stay away from Alt 89 from Prescott to Cottonwood unless you are expert at mountain road driving and braking. We took it towing with a 38' Diesel Bounder 2 years ago and thought the route was breathtaking. However we met several others that were absolutely petrified and one with what appeared to be completely fried brakes. Going through Jerome is also very tight. We'd do it again but definitely not for the feint of heart or inexperienced. John

RE: Aqua Hot System?

Aqua-Hot is a diesel fuel fired boiler from VEHICLE SYSTEMS Inc.that heats a coil of your fresh water line within a 'Box' bigger than a Microwave ...about like a Mini-Fridge. It has its own exhaust tailpipe. Its circulating liquid that does this is Anti-freeze that is also pumped underfloor to heat registers in the coach. (One zone can also pre-heat your Motorhome's engine coolant too.) It's controlled with wall thermostats and a computer. One downside is they usually need frequent 'service' and fine-tuning, but the new ones are improving as I hear it. TOMAll true and also adds about 8 grand to the cost. Oh yeah, you loose a fair amount of basement compartment and it uses a LOT of electric just for the fans and pumps. OK if you are in a park with hookups, but we boondock for weeks at a time, so not for us. John

RE: Rock guard for DP?

Try this. Coast Line Cover We've had 2 and if I get another toad I'll get a third. We've used it for 2 trips to Alaska and about 200 miles on dirt. It has to be cleaned (you can use a hose on both sides) but we've had no problems with paint damage from dirt and no dings. DW can put it on by herself in about 10 minutes. Together we take about 3-4 minutes. John

RE: Need help with backing

Hand on bottom of the wheel. When it moves left, back of trailer moves same way, and visa-versa. Go to a BIG parking lot away from others and practice, Practice, PRACTICE. If you have a director, all they have to do is tell you which way the back needs to move. John

RE: First Year Retirees - Home This Winter, How About You?

Winter of 06-07 I had some shoulder surgery and had to stay home. By March I was climbing the walls and had to GO! We travel a LOT, about 15k miles a year, and not being able to go was a killer. We've been retired 5 years. Good luck with your new endeavor. John

RE: Cat C7 300HP

We had pulled into a Flying J in Pecos, TX, and shut down to refuel. Tried to restart and it wouldn't. No other indications. They had to put a computer on it to diagnose. John

RE: Cat C7 300HP

We had an 05 Diesel Bounder and lost the HEUI pump on it. There was a known problem with the pump that they fixed in later iterations, but there was never a recall to the best of my knowledge. They'll have to go in through the top (the bedroom) to get at the pump, and will have to remove some components, but the changeout is fairly straightforward. Repair took about 30 hours all told, but part of that was waiting for a bay, shift change, and waiting for the pump from CAT, and us overnighting in the rig. Our parts and labor was covered by Freightliner as they're the ones who replaced it. I'm sure CAT ended up eating it in the end but I wasn't concerned. Our pump went out at about 12,000 miles in Pecos, TX, and entailed a 90 mile tow to Odessa, but it didn't cost us a dime out of pocket. We went on to put 52,000 miles on the rig without a hiccup, so once you're done it probably will not come back. We didn't have any other parts replaced, so enjoy. John

RE: When do you need trailer/toad brakes?

Another example of different rules for combination vehicles in different states is overall length. If you are legal in your state at 75' you will be illegal in a State that is 65'. No reciprocity applies. I don't have the RCW at hand but Washington State specifically forbids double towing with a RV. I checked. I then built a swivelwheel type "load carrying vehicle extension" and Washington State law enforcement says it is legal. No registration or license required, it is part of the vehicle it is attached to. http://i249.photobucket.com/albums/gg219/jauguston/MH-Sami-TraileratCasey7-08003.jpgWOW!, What a great idea. Is there any way I could get some more information on how you have the wheels swiveling and how you have it hooked to the Jeep? Also, do you have the wheels sprung at all and approximately how much load do you estimate on the rear trailer wheels? For those of us using a small light boat, this would be an ideal solution. We have a 14' inflatable, and getting it from a campsite to a launch point is really sporty. I have a very light launching trailer that is not road capable, but I can use it for a mile or so at less than 10mph. Not a good solution but up to now I didn't have any other ideas. Great job, and any info would be much appreciated. John

My book says NLGI II. Whatever you use , once you decide don't change the brand or spec. John

RE: When do you need trailer/toad brakes?

During an emergency.Yep, and as long as you can predict when you'll need them, there's no need to put them on until just before the emergency. John

RE: Has anyone used Rid-X in black tank?

It's a HOLDING tank not a SEPTIC SYSTEM. We have never used ANY tank additives and have never seen the need for anything. No odors, no issues in three RV's, a Class C and 2 Class A's. We boondock for up to two weeks at a time, and have been to Alaska twice, so we don't empty all that often. A lot of folks seem to think the additives (Mouse Milk) are necessary and the promoters of these products do everything they can to push that idea. In my opion, the only result is to lighten your wallet. Your decision, and also your money. John

RE: A couple questions on SMI AFone

You're going to have to tap one of the brake lines at the rear axle or at the distribution valve usually mounted on the frame above the differential. The port in front is to tap for inflating tires and such. Air from it is always on and it does not come on and off with application of the brake pedal. We drilled a 1/4" hole in the dash and mounted a red 12v LED we got at radio shack to be the brake indicator light. I switched the AF1 from our previous Diesel Bounder to the new rig and didn't want to leave a big hole in the dash by taking the light. I like the small one a lot better. I'm extremely happy with the unit. We've had it for over 18 months and about 20k miles in the Bounder and Bus. We did have a problem with the activation cylinder that goes on the toad. Broke a C clip inside, but the problem was immediately obvious with the brake indicating light. Called the folks and they had someone heading to Quartzsite, so they met us in Tucson and switched it out on the road. Five minutes and no cost. I was ready to replace the C clip but it had swallowed the old one and I was afraid it might do internal damage. My best advise overall is to lay all parts out in the toad so you're sure they will fit. Take your time and the installation is a breeze. John

RE: Towing in Ontario

A growing trend either in the US or Canada. I hope they keep the teeth in the tests and don't let them deteriorate into just revenue generators. There are a number of folks out there that have no business behind the wheel of a large heavy rig. John

RE: What is the best hydraulic jack

Any standard bottle jack of sufficient capacity. Remember, the higher capacity of the jack, the easier to pump, but the more pumps necessary. Also make sure the jack is small enough to fit under the jack point when the tire is flat and the wheel is resting on the ground. John

RE: TV converter box using using 12 volt converter

Cool move. Much more efficient setup than converting it to 115 then back to 9. I love playing around like that. Good luck with it. John

RE: TV reception question....

Yep, they still will work. If there is an analog TV in it, it will need a converter box, but that's all. Of course, the cable and satellite setups are already digital, so no changes are necessary. John

RE: Fishing

If you think prices in the lower 48 prices are high, check out Alaska non-resident with a King Salmon stamp. $145+100, but worth it even at that price, in our opinion. John
